We're facing an obvious paradigm shift in service delivery at work. After listening to these points, I was starting to identify who did what within my team. And who could do what within my team. It really got me thinking into the future.

Tom deserves a tremendous amount of credit for his energy, his enthusiasm, and his perseverence.
As a physically disabled business owner myself, if I had half his spirit and confidence, I would consider myself a great success. As the cards would have it, though, I was obviously destined to sit at a computer and be a geek, while Tom was destined to be outgoing and energetic and interface with people. I cannot possibly praise his work enough. On another note, our product is not "cheap" -- it was designed to be AFFORDABLE by as broad a sector of the population as possible, so people in devastated places like the Gulf Coast who are still suffering in the aftermath of Katrina in '07 and Ike in '08 could get the same quality of medical treatment in an emergency as Donald Trump would.

Shame! Shame! Shame! on Ed! Sales training is one of my pet projects and Ed used the word CHEAP to somewhat describe one of the products I sell. Yhe fact is, that is a term only allowed to be used within the confines of a Wal*Mart store! Other than that, Ed has done yet another good deed for the disabled business owners of Michigan!

I agree with your take on this, Ed, especially when you cite networking opportunities regardless of the business itself. These are either inside or outside the business.
The reason large companies bother to spend money on kitchenettes for every 30 cubicles or so, is that so much that is essential to the workings of the business happen in those kitchenettes and "hallway meetings", where the right people happen to bump into each other at the right time.

The same concept applies outside work. "Socializing" a new project with others, particularly around people who could "bring you your rain" in malls, markets, oil-change places, etc., gets the message out. You just begin by saying you are excited about a new project or training you are working on.

The other, hidden part of being a company salesperson, especially for smaller companies, is appealing to your customers. If you have had good conversations, done an unrelated favor for some, or simply appear to be doing so (e.g. "His schedule is really full today but I'll try and get you some time" and the schedule isn't full), these customers will return to your business because they liked the experience you gave them. It doesn't matter if your business is doing what they want or not. All things being equal, they will go where they had the best experience.

I see airplane advertising as a useful option in certain circumstances.

First, it's great when you're trying to reach a large audience and you know they'll be at a certain place and time (attending a college football game or outdoor concert, for example).

Next, it's great when you're trying to affiliate yourself with that event (sort of a poor person's "Goodyear Blimp", so to speak).

Lastly, it's great when you're trying to compel that audience to do something in their immediate future, e.g. eat at TGI Fridays after the game ends.

The down-side of course is (a) cost, (b) reliance on weather conditions, (c) its temporary nature (vs. a billboard, for instance) and (d) the limited length of the message you can convey. "Eat at Joes" works great, but "GM Now Offering 0% Interest for 60 Months, $1,500 Cash Back Plus Lifetime Oil Changes for all New Cars"...well, that ain't gonna fly, if you'll pardon the pun.
